Kenya memories

I remember listening to John's memories of his days In Kenya, especially references to the wonderful wildlife there, and meeting Daphne Sheldrick. He lent me a book "An African Love" by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, who has committed her life to protecting the Kenyan wildlife, in particular the hundreds of orphaned elephants she has saved.

She mentions in her book:

"Fortunately, the British Army was willing to help in an intensive count as a training exercise. There was great excitement the Army Air Corps arrived, bringing with them three Beaver aircraft, and two helicopters ('Alouettes' John has scribbled alongside this), maintenance and ground crew, petrol tanks, camouflage gear and all the equipment necessary for a training exercise. It so happened that on that day the orphans were feeding close to the Park's new state-of-the-art airstrip, so they came and lent a hand, Samson rolling drums of fuel along the ground and inspecting aircraft with his trunk and Rufus less eager to become involved, huffing and snorting suspiciously at the strange intruders into his territory."

John was party to this day with and had very fond memories; 8 Flight Army Air Corps based at Wilson Airfield, Nairobi.
